This is a collection of some of the best of my improvised music recorded on
cassette tapes in the 1970's and 1980's. It has three sections:
Songs 1-3: Selections from an improv session with another musician,
Deb Saidel
on flute, in 1978 or some time around then.
Songs 4-9: Selections from a solo session recorded on one unknown gentle
day around the same time. Some of this music ended up on Side B of the 1988 cassette
compilation mentioned in the notes to the Joy album.
Songs 10-14: All the new music recorded in 1988 for Side A of the tape compilation,
other than the three tracks from that day which were included on the Joy album.
This music is not loaded yet, but coming soon...
In all sections, the piano was the same Schubert studio grand.
Song 1: Flute and Piano Improv. No. 1

Deb and Bruce got together for an improv session some time around 1978, and
this is what was worth keeping and making available to other people.
These pieces are presented in their original order, and it is interesting to study
how the musical communication developed as the session progressed.
This piece was included on the 1988 cassette tape compilation mentioned in the
notes to the Joy album.
A little gentle thunder volunteers as the last note of this piece.
And I suddenly suspect, thirty years later, that the surge in left-channel
volume five seconds before the thunder was the effect on the tape recorder of
a voltage surge from the lightning.

Song 2: Flute and Piano Improv. No. 2

This piece is not as smooth as the other two, but it is an interesting
glimpse into the process of trying to improvise together. There are a few
places where it almost gets lost for a while, but then it comes back stronger.
The recording also had some technical problems that were difficult to fix
on tape in 1988. Because of this, and because of the lapses, it wasn't
included on the compilation tape.
For thirty years it languished in a shoe box. But now, by digital magic,
it can finally be let out to play with your ears.
